What's the difference between goalie skates and regular skates?

Goalie skates are designed specifically for the goalie position to be more protective, more mobile, and more stable than player's skates. Goalie skates feature a lower boot cut for greater mobility and a longer, flatter blade for increased stability and more ice surface contact. Finally, many goalie skates feature increased protection, in the form of thicker materials or even an external "cowling" surrounding the boot.

Do all NHL goalies wear goalie skates?

Yes, all NHL goalies wear goalie skates in varying styles from varying manufacturers.

Can a player wear goalie skates?

There is no rule against players wearing goalie skates, however, the increased blade length and surface contact with the ice makes them very slow for skating and much more difficult to make sharp, quick turns.

Do goalie skates fit differently?

Skate sizing is generally the same for both player and goalie skates. Remember, the general rule of thumb for skate sizing is 1.5 sizes smaller than your athletic shoe size, but be sure to check out each individual manufacturer's sizing chart.
